Tomorrow the 2014 FIFA World Cup kicks off in São Paulo, Brazil. The preparations for this event have been controversial in the host country. Copa pra quem? (Who is the World Cup for?) is a slogan frequently used by protesters who are disillusioned by the sense of exclusion produced by a highly contested security policy, gentrification processes, property speculation, spectacular infrastructure projects locals see little use for and impossibly high ticket prices to the event itself.
These developments have complicated the story of Brazil’s success at reducing poverty and inequality in recent years, and illustrates that there are still numerous challenges to be overcome.
A new documentary, available in the link below, addresses some of these issues and sheds light upon how the world’s greatest football event could become controversial in a country so famous for its passion for football.
